One in Six Mobile Phones in Britain is Contaminated with E-Coli

January 16th, 2012

A new UK wide study has revealed that one in six mobile phones in Britain is contaminated with E-Coli with faecal matter origin. The research found that 16% of phones and 16% of hands tested harboured E-Coli, a bacteria which inhabits the human intestines and causes gastric infections.

Faecal matter can survive on hands and surfaces such as mobile phones for hours at a time and can easily be spread through touching commonly used surfaces such as printer buttons, keyboards, mice and door handles.

Stewart Anderson, VP of Marketing at Durable UK says “We have already seen from the massive response we get from Computer Cleaning Month in September that people are genuinely concerned about the effects that bacteria lurking on their technology can have. This new research is shocking and demonstrates the importance of effective hygiene practices.

“It is critical that businesses offer their employees and customers a practical way of protecting themselves to help the combat the spread of illness. By introducing simple measures such as cleaning wipes and antibacterial hand gel, the risk of potential germs is virtually eliminated.”

Irritations of Office Workers Revealed in Survey

December 13th, 2011

A survey by LinkedIn on ‘pet peeves’ has revealed that workers around the world have a many common irritations that plague them on a daily basis.

The survey found that employees in India are most likely to feel irritated at work. The survey also found American staff get most annoyed by co-workers taking food from the fridge that doesn’t belong to them, Brazilians are irritated by gossiping, and British workers get wound up by constantly complaining colleagues.

Germans are annoyed by dirty common areas, including microwaves and fridges, Indian employees are most likely to be irritated by mobile phone ringtones and text alerts, and Japanese workers don’t take kindly to office pranks.

There were also gender differences: 51% of UK women were annoyed by ‘clothing that’s too revealing for the workplace’ while only 21% of UK men said it was an issue. Swedish workers were the most accepting of inappropriate clothing in the workplace.

Nationality or gender differences aside, that vast majority of professionals surveyed (78% of 17,000) agreed their top peeve is ‘people not taking ownership of their actions’.

Sixteen countries were included in the survey which listed a total of 38 pet peeves. India was found to have the most, Italy has the least, and the UK the tenth in the list.

Some other peeves included in the list were:

  • Leaving food in the fridge or microwave past its sell by date.
  • Snoozer meetings.
  • People who don’t pick up e-mails.
  • Long or late meetings.

So, what’s the solution to eliminating the office peeve so we can all lead more happy and fulfilled lives in the workplace? The first thing is not to brush it under the carpet and pretend it’s not there. It’s always best to be honest and deal with what irritates early on so that it doesn’t escalate. There’s no need to confront your colleagues like a bull in a china shop as it could strain your relationship even more. The secret is tact, to remain calm, keep professional and don’t make it personal.

If you ever get peeved at work let us know about it (and how you solved it) by leaving a comment or posting a message on our Facebook page.

Guide to Choosing an Office Printer

October 25th, 2011

How much should I pay?
Just because a certain printer is cheap doesn’t necessarily mean that the ink is too, so check with your supplier before making your choice.

Should I choose a Laser or Inkjet printer?
If you are going to be printing over 500 pages per month, a laser printer is the best option because toner cartridges are designed for printing large volumes whereas inkjets are for smaller volumes.

Should I choose a Mono or Colour printer?
Even if you usually print in black, having the option to print in colour when you want or need to is always useful. The best bet is to buy a printer that uses separate cartridges for printing colour and black. That way, as a cartridge runs out, you can save both ink and cash.

Should I choose Standard or High Capacity toner cartridges?
Your choice of cartridge capacity should be based on your daily printing volumes. Standard capacity cartridges usually have a page yield of around 2-3000 whereas high capacity toner cartridges can yield around 6-8000, so it makes sense if you are only printing occasionally to choose a standard cartridge which will be more cost effective in the long term. However, even though high capacity cartridges can yield more than twice that of a standard cartridge they do not cost more than twice the price. It just depends on whether you want save money in the short term or in the long term.

Should I choose a Multi-function printer? (MFP)
The benefits of multi-function printers is that they give you options for printing, faxing and scanning documents as well as being space savers. However, if more than one person needs to print, scan and fax at the same time they’ll have to wait their turn; not so good in an urgent situation.

Should I choose WiFi or Ethernet Networking?
More and more offices are opting to install WiFi printers for the obvious reason that they eliminate the need for wires. It is also easier and quicker to add computers to a wireless network.

Should I choose an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)?
If you need to copy large volumes of documents and want to save time, an automatic document feeder is definitely an option.

Should I choose a large capacity printer?
Printing large volumes can be time consuming adding more paper to the paper tray. Also, every time you pause printing to add more paper, toner is wasted so a printer with a large capacity paper tray might be the more cost effective choice.

To compete in the print market we need to know we are giving our clients the best quality and value for money that is available. The only way we can do this is to control the printing ourselves from paper buying to production.”

In-House Design

A further benefit of using Lawprint for printing is the in-house design facilities. Other times clients do know what they want, but need help to visualise it. The in-house design facility gives our clients a peace of mind that can only come from a complete end to end service.”

A4 Paper or an Office Romance

August 15th, 2011

It’s amazing who you can meet whilst you’re busy stocking up the stationery cupboard. Although company bosses would rather it didn’t happen, there is little they can do to stop it. After all, an office romance is now one of the main ways that most people end up meeting their life partner.

It’s no secret that today’s office is a hotbed for romance. As one employer explains, “When you work with hundreds of young, talented, energetic people, it’s bound to happen.” And with work weeks routinely stretching beyond 50 hours a week, employees have less time to look outside the office. An interesting finding is that more employers i.e. managers than employees, report that they’ve had office romances.

Certainly the taboo of an office romance is fading. With deadlines to meet and bills to pay, people are showing less inclination for conventional matchmaker spots such as singles bars, clubs and pubs. Instead, they’re looking for love in the cubicle next door. People work longer hours today, which creates fewer opportunities to meet others outside the office. So, it’s no surprise that budding romances blossom among those with whom we spend the most time. Once frowned upon, inter-office liaisons have become increasingly accepted and more prevalent.

The office provides a pool of like-minded people that spend at least 40 hours a week together and share similar acquaintances, experiences and frustrations. Stationery cupboard talk with colleagues is a non-threatening way to get to know someone without putting yourself on the market, and for better or worse, it seems inevitable that these office interactions frequently lead to more intimate and meaningful relationships. Workplace romances generally have high potential for longevity. Of those who have dated colleagues, more than half said their relationship led to marriage or a long-term relationship.

People have a greater opportunity to mix with their co-workers now and those relationships can benefit the company too, because employees channel romantic energy into work tasks and bring more enthusiasm and energy to their work. Company policies vary, but with legal restrictions in place there is little that employers can do to stop the office romance.

The Benefits of Direct Mail and Envelope Printing

June 23rd, 2011

In spite of mail decreasing volumes, it’s worth remembering the value and benefits of envelope printing and direct mail.

Research by the Envelope Manufacturers Association Foundation shows that 75% of householders prefer to receive bills through the mail and are 3 times more likely to pay attention to direct mail than an internet advert or e-mail spam, and 84% say that envelopes leave a more memorable impression. Perhaps the most persuasive stat in favour of direct mail with printed envelopes is that 41% say they pay more attention to marketing material in an envelope compared to just 16% who pay more attention to fliers or postcards without an envelope. So it seems that ‘snail mail’ is definitely not dead.

Every business owner knows the importance of having an online presence to connect with their customers whether it’s e-mail, a website or a social networking account. However, if direct mail is still an effective marketing medium it shouldn’t be disregarded, in fact, it should work in partnership with an internet strategy.

Let’s have a look at some of the plus points for direct mail marketing and envelope printing:

  • Direct mail gives a better impression – the message on your printed envelope isn’t competing with other internet adverts.
  • A properly targeted printed message will get more attention than e-mail spam.
  • Many people are not comfortable giving information or conducting transactions online preferring instead to use paper and printed envelopes.
  • Direct mail is more personal than e-mail spam or a web advert and creates an emotional connection between a business and consumers.

When it comes to choosing envelopes, there’s a couple of things to consider. Envelope size can determine postage costs so choose a size according to your postage and printing budgets. Envelope type determines how long they take to produce. For example, envelopes with window openings take longer so consider what your lead time is.

With over 20 years printing experience, Lawprint advise businesses how to make the most of their printing budgets for successful direct mail campaigns. Call us now on 0141 810 9850 or enter you details into our online enquiry form to receive a quotation.

The Stationery Market is Never Stationary

May 9th, 2011

How much importance do you place on a humble ballpoint pen, a sheet of A4 paper or your diary? Many of us take these stationery items for granted but we would be lost without them, especially if we work in an office environment.

Demand for stationery products is on the increase and professional users, small office and home office users (SoHo), and private users are now more discerning in what they want and buy. Whereas office stationery used to be purely utilitarian, the most in demand items these days are the ones with clear added value. These include:

  • Fire Safety and Control certified products (FSC3)
  • Ergonomic items
  • Personalised products
  • Products with safety and security features

Britain has more office workers than any other country in Europe and because of the poor economic climate large volume businesses are tending to buy lower spec, unbranded stationery. Some forecasters suggest that he economic downturn may also affect the consumption of stationery by larger businesses.

However, the real growing market is the SoHo users. More than half the UK population has a home office and demand for not just general items like printer cartridges and paper, but speciality and individualised products is particularly high. While functionality is obviously important, many feel the need to have added value stationery which may come in a variety of colours, use different materials and trendy designs, or have a designer name tag. Some items are even used as decorations or ornaments in the home.

The number of people, younger and older, in education is set to rise in the next few years and this means an expanding market for pens, pencils, paper, folders, pads, notebooks, etc.

There’s a real buzz in the stationery industry and consumers are becoming more and more enthusiastic about what stationery they use whether in the office, at home or on the move.

What’s your favourite piece of stationery? Is it that special pen? A cool planner? Why not post a picture of it on the Lawprint Facebook page.
